But I read Curtis fairly often, and seriously, this panel makes no sense even if you follow the strip religiously.

poor wording.
saw an author on the Colbert Report who argues obama is not "black" since he has no history with slavery or civil rights since his father is African and mom is "the swiss miss girl." interesting perspective because this means he is white society's "black" candidate that brings in no real baggage of American history.
Um, I pretty much understood that panel. Maybe you're getting dumber??
I do get it, it's just written horribly.
it could simplify it and say
"they were a group of african american performers who performed in clubs that wouldn't have even let them come in to see themselves perform as african american performers performing their performances!"
it's a comic, why does it have ot be obtuse?
